Can Undersea Volcanoes Power Cities? A Seattle Startup Just Took the First Step
Published · 1 min read
Seattle-based Endurance Energy achieved a significant milestone by generating net-positive energy from an underwater geothermal plant, marking the first such accomplishment.
The company successfully completed a full operations cycle, from drilling to electricity generation, on an active underwater volcano. This breakthrough could provide round-the-clock clean energy to cities on the northwest coast of the U.S. and serve as a proof of concept for other regions, particularly those along the Pacific Ring of Fire. Endurance Energy plans to deploy larger 2-megawatt generators in Tonga to test more productive, compact systems.
