Sanctioned Iranian Tanker Slips Past U.S. Blockade, Delivers Cargo to China

Published · 1 min read

A sanctioned Iranian tanker, the SOGL, carrying 500,000 barrels of liquefied petroleum gas, managed to slip past the U.S. naval blockade and deliver its cargo to China.

According to United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI), the tanker, which was filmed at a Malaysian anchorage, was sanctioned by the Treasury Department for transporting Iranian propane/butane. Since the blockade's reinstatement in July, only a few small tankers have successfully passed, primarily carrying non-crude cargoes. Malaysia's EOPL anchorage is highlighted as a key node in Iran's oil trade to China, with UANI noting that Malaysian authorities may be turning a blind eye. China now takes nearly 100% of Iran's oil and LPG exports, up from about 80% in earlier years.
