DARPA Backs Project to Measure AI Energy Use at Every Stage of the Workflow

Published · 1 min read

DARPA is funding a project at the University of Michigan Engineering to develop a new system for tracking and optimizing energy use in AI software.

The project, E-CALC, aims to enhance energy tracking across every stage of AI workflows, from data processing to deployment, to reduce electricity demand and extend battery life for AI-enabled devices. This initiative is particularly important for military and defense settings where power constraints are critical. The project is expected to last two years and is backed by $1.83 million in funding.
