Driving test waits fall to two-year low - but still average 20 weeks

Waiting times for driving tests have dropped to 19.7 weeks, the lowest since November 2024, according to official figures.
However, the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) aims to reduce this to seven weeks by next autumn. The DVSA has been working to clear a backlog from the pandemic and has increased examiner numbers to their highest since 2017. Despite these efforts, many learner drivers still face long waits, with some areas reporting delays of up to 21 weeks. A driving instructor noted that while test re-selling has stopped, the shortage of examiners remains a significant issue.
