Massive AI Data Center Sparks Backlash Despite Clean Energy Promises
Published · 1 min read
Google is developing a 780-MW data center in Minnesota, proposing an agreement with Xcel Energy to finance the addition of 1.4 GW of wind, 200 MW of solar, and 300 MW of battery storage.
The project aims to benefit the wider grid and help Google achieve its goal of operating entirely on carbon-free energy by 2030. However, 71% of Americans oppose local data center construction, and environmental groups and residents in Pine Island are concerned about water usage, noise, and potential impacts on the Zumbro River. Google's agreement includes minimum demand charges and exit fees to ensure the infrastructure is utilized.
