The young Americans choosing Y2K cars over shiny new SUVs: ‘I get so much crap from people’
Published · 1 min read
Young Americans are increasingly choosing older, affordable cars from the late 1990s and early 2000s, known as Y2K cars, over new or even newer used vehicles.
This trend is driven by affordability, the ability to fix these cars themselves, and a nostalgic appeal. For instance, Jack Price bought a 2010 Volkswagen Jetta for $6,000 in cash, which he has driven extensively. The supply of these cars is dwindling, and while they offer independence and repairability, they come with safety concerns and are generally less reliable than modern vehicles. The US auto industry has introduced more affordable models, but they still come with significant payments.
