COP31 Host Urges NATO Nations to Spend More on Climate Than Defense
Published · 1 min read
Turkey, host of the COP31 climate summit, is urging wealthy nations to prioritize climate spending over defense, aligning with its own plans to invest in renewable energy while expanding oil and gas production.
The summit, held in Antalya from November 9-20, aims to achieve a 35% share of electricity in global energy by 2035. Turkey and Australia co-hosted a pre-summit in Fiji, but only 13 national leaders attended. The summit emphasizes the need for climate finance for vulnerable communities and prioritizes ocean health. Turkey's president-designate, Murat Kurum, argued that climate change poses a greater threat than defense and called for increased spending on climate issues.
