Britain's Renewable Energy Boom Is Hitting a Grid Bottleneck
Published · 1 min read
The United Kingdom has invested heavily in renewable energy to reduce its reliance on fossil fuels, but faces significant grid inefficiencies due to an unprepared transmission infrastructure.
Despite several new wind and solar projects coming online, the U.K. continues to rely heavily on natural gas. On October 14, the grid operator spent £47.9 million to switch off wind farms due to transmission network bottlenecks, while simultaneously powering up gas plants. National Grid has proposed an additional £4.5 billion in investments to upgrade the grid, but the accelerated pace of renewable energy deployment is currently outpacing these upgrades.
